Meet the maker

Hi,

In this first blog post I would like to introduce myself to you. This way you get to know a bit more about the maker behind the jewellery brand.

My name is Kara. I'm the artist behind Kara Jewel Design. At this moment I'm 31 years old, married to Vincent and the proud humom of 2 Maine Coon cats Charlie en Sam. We live together in Lommel, a small city in Belgium. I have my own little jewellery studio in our house. The place where the magic happens. 😉

My love for jewelry and crafts started as a little child. I really loved being creative, working with my hands and creating my own little world.

After graduating high school I started studying dentistry and worked as a dentist for over 5 years.

In 2018 I took a big, bold descision by following my heart and dreams by founding Kara Jewel Design. It is a small one woman business. Everything you see here is solely designed and made by me. Because I really believe in the importance of life time learning and inspiration, I'm now combining my own brand with my study "Jewelry and Object Design" at PXL MAD (Hasselt). I will definitely post more about my journey at PXL MAD on this blog. Kara Jewel Design is my playground, my unique way to express myself, to learn about myself, to grow,...

When I'm not working in my studio or attending school, you can find me in a Crossfit box. It has become my second biggest passion since 4,5 years. Crossfit consists of constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. It is a combination of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. It makes you fitter in every day life. I recommend everyone to give it a try, it will change your life!

I love to make fun, unique, minimalistic, geometrical jewellery.

Jewellery for me is all about expressing who you are, about being unique, a bold pop of colour in a black and white world.

Because I really love color and ancient crafts I decided to follow a summer school on enameling. It took place in Idar-Oberstein in Germany. I had a wonderful time with the other students and Danni Schwaag our teacher. For other jewellery designers reading this: the Summer school is a must do! Such a nice atmosphere, lots of new things to learn, inspiration and delicious homemade food 😊.

Enameling is a proces whereby powdered glass is fused to a metal base by firing. Because of this method, every piece will be unique,.

The least I can say is I fell in love with the technique. I'm eagerly waiting for my own kiln (little oven to enamel) to arrive.

At the moment I'm sketching and designing my new collection. So when my kiln arrives I can start enameling and make the most beautiful, coloured pieces. Can't wait to show you more!

Hope you enjoyed reading my first blog post!

Would love to hear in the comments what you think of it. Maybe you can introduce yourself, always nice to know more about each other.

And if you would like to support my jewellery journey it would be really lovely if you share this blog on social media or with friends and family.

Love,

Kara
